RAF Global in Mozambique endeavours to make long-term, strategic and systemic investment around the key sectors of health, nutrition, education, and sustainable livelihoods along with advancing good governance at the subnational level. Through strategic partnership with government and non-government stakeholders, RAF Global reaches out to the most marginalised individuals, families, and communities in the poorest areas of Mozambique to improve their quality of life.
We work to strengthen sustainable livelihoods, expand access to job opportunities, and foster entrepreneurship. These efforts have empowered many individuals from low-income families to achieve financial independence and stability. Women’s participation and empowerment are central to all our initiatives, ensuring that gender equality is at the core of our work.
In the heart of Bilene district lies Messano, a resilient community that has long faced one of life’s most basic challenges—access to clean, safe water. For years, water scarcity defined daily life here, especially during the long, dry season. The harsh geological conditions made drilling for water nearly impossible in most areas, and the scarce natural water sources were often brackish and far too deep for common pumps to reach.
Women and girls carried the heaviest burden, often waking before sunrise to walk several kilometers in search of water—sometimes relying on open ponds filled with rainwater, unsafe for drinking. Without knowledge of water treatment, preventable illnesses like cholera and diarrheal diseases became seasonal hardships.
Among those who lived this reality was Leonor Armando Mavui, 26, a devoted mother of two. Every day, Leonor would walk almost 8 kilometers to fetch water, a journey that consumed much of her time and energy. On difficult days, water was so scarce that her children would miss school or go without meals, and household duties would be left undone. Yet, like so many in Messano, Leonor persevered, holding on to hope that change would come.
That change arrived in October 2024, when RAF Global, in partnership with AMURT and in collaboration with Messano’s community leaders, brought new life to a resource long lost—the community’s bore well. Once a vital source of water, it had been out of service since 2016, leaving the population without its benefits for eight long years. Through dedication, cooperation, and the community’s active participation, the well was rehabilitated and water once again flowed in Messano.
The impact was immediate and profound. Clean, safe water now reaches 150 families—around 450 people—transforming daily life. For Leonor, it meant mornings spent with her children instead of long treks under the hot sun. It meant her children could attend school regularly, and her home could thrive with the simple dignity of having water close by.
Messano’s story is a reminder that when communities, leaders, and partners unite, even challenges that span years can be overcome. Today, the sound of running water in the village is more than just a resource—it is a symbol of restored hope, renewed health, and the promise of a better future.
Six-year-old Daniel had never experienced the world of sound. Born with a hearing impairment, he had grown up in silence—communicating through expressions and gestures, unaware of the voices and sounds around him.
Through RAF Global’s community hearing support program, and with the expertise of Dr. Esther, the chief audiologist, Daniel was fitted with his first hearing aid.
When the device was switched on, Daniel’s face lit up. Moments later, he spoke his very first word—“Mamma.” His mother smiled through happy tears, hearing her son call her for the first time.
Daniel spent the rest of the day working with Dr. Esther, repeating words, listening intently, and discovering the simple joys of sound—his mother’s voice, the laughter around him, and his own.
This small but powerful change has opened the door to new possibilities for Daniel—helping him learn, communicate, and connect in ways he never could before. His journey is a reminder that with the right support, even the quietest lives can be filled with new opportunities.
