In Mozambique, RAF Global focuses on sustainable livelihoods by empowering underprivileged women and youth through targeted programmes that address systemic and technical barriers. The following programmes are strategically rolled out to create a supportive ecosystem that promotes gender and social equity and fosters financial resilience among marginalised communities.
Since 2015, RAF Global has been providing free, vocational training in Gaza and Maputo provinces, offering a range of 15 market-oriented courses including Tailoring, Basic Beauty and Grooming, Welding, Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical Work, and Basic Electronic Repairs.
In Maputo Province, RAF Global operates a full-fledged, dedicated Skill Development Centre in Machava. In contrast, the Skill Development Centres in the Gaza Province are set up as individual cells depending on the market requirement and demand for each course. Till 2025, RAF Global has trained about 6,000 youth on various skills.
The programmes equip the participants with in-demand skills to enhance employability. In addition, RAF Global organises workshops and programmes for participants to enhance their entrepreneurial and leadership capabilities.
RAF Global partners with leading companies to equip participants with industry-relevant skills and exposure, and guidance to meet market demands. Collaborations include Godrej Darling, which provides the students with advanced training in beauty and grooming; MozTex, which facilitates entry-level employment in garment manufacturing jobs; and TATA Motors and Fund for Investment and Assets of Water Supply (FIPAG), which offer internship opportunities.
RAF Global supports small-scale entrepreneurs by offering tailored resources and opportunities to enable them to build sustainable livelihoods. Outstanding graduates of skill-building courses are identified and provided seed capital in the form of business tools and starter kits, helping them to launch their income-generating ventures.
To strengthen their chances of long-term success, RAF Global facilitates market access by connecting entrepreneurs to essential tools, local market opportunities, and relevant industry networks. This holistic approach is to help small businesses grow and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
Further, RAF Global provides interest-free loans to small vendors, including fruit and vegetable sellers and local grocers-supporting the expansion of their micro-enterprises. As these loans are repaid, the capital is reinvested to benefit other vendors, creating a revolving fund that fuels ongoing entrepreneurial growth across communities.
RAF Global is committed to fostering financial inclusion for marginalised individuals, helping them access vital financial services and participate more actively in the local economy. One of its key initiatives involves the gradual introduction of self-help groups, which encourage savings, internal lending, and collective action for activities such as input sourcing and group-based marketing. The groups also receive financial support in the form of group-managed funds, which are equitably utilised to support individual enterprises.
To extend financial services in underserved areas, RAF Global facilitates the training of aspiring women and youth to become mobile banking agents. They are provided with interest-free loans to start their ventures, enabling them to offer essential financial services to communities while simultaneously achieving economic empowerment. To date, over 40 people are supported under this initiative.
RAF Global employs a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to strengthen healthcare services and infrastructure facilities in the intervention areas in Mozambique. With a focus on enhancing the quality and accessibility of healthcare, RAF Global addresses both preventive and curative aspects of health
A diverse range of health interventions have been rolled out across Gaza and Maputo provinces, in collaboration with local stakeholders, and private and public sector partners. The programme works to impact the following areas:
RAF Global has been working on the revival of boreholes in rural regions of Gaza and Maputo Provinces with community engagement since 2015. By 2024, over 150,000 people have benefited from the restoration of about 142 boreholes. The project is executed with the support of government stakeholders at local and district levels and with the partner organisation, AMURT.
To ensure sustainability of the boreholes, a water management committee is appointed by the District Authorities, comprising men and women members from nearby communities. They subsequently, receive training in borehole repair, establishing a local governance system for the maintenance and management of community boreholes.
RAF Global also leverages advanced technology to ensure the digitisation of boreholes, enabling comprehensive monitoring and providing a single point of reference for all created assets at a glance. The KOBO Toolbox, a data collection software developed by the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative to collect data from challenging environments, is extensively used.
The team meticulously updates the information on the assets constructed in the application. The geolocation feature of the application ensures that the team can identify each water tank/well including those in the most remote locations, with a click, advancing accountability and transparency.
Community-based health camps in partnership with the Provincial Directorate of Health and local stakeholders have been delivering essential diagnostic and clinical care medical services to the distant rural regions of Gaza and Maputo Provinces.
Health education and awareness sessions on HIV/AIDS, malaria and menstrual hygiene are conducted regularly in schools and communities. These awareness campaigns aim for information dissemination about prevention, the importance of maintaining good health practices, and to promoted community resilience against preventable diseases.
Along with general camps, specialised camps’ for cataract, vision and hearing, check-ups for senior citizens and ear-screening camps for school students have ensured access to early diagnosis and appropriate interventions – wax removal, hearing aids, referrals for cataract surgery, and so on. The camps have helped address a critical service gap for residents in rural, remote locations. They have also ensured timely access to preventive and curative care for more than 33,000 rural residents in Gaza and Maputo provinces in the past year.
Under Health System Strengthening, RAF Global is dedicated to enhancing the quality of healthcare services in Mozambique through targeted investments in medical equipment and infrastructure. The organisation has supplied critical medical equipment, including an ophthalmic microscope, infant radiant warmer, incubator, dental chair, and sterilisation units.
To further reinforce healthcare delivery, RAF Global has undertaken infrastructure improvement in health centres of Chongoene, Limpopo, and Bilene districts of Gaza Province, and Matola district of Maputo Province. This included improving the conditions of emergency and general rooms by repairing leaking roofs, installing water pipelines, painting interiors, renovating bathrooms and constructing sheltered waiting areas for our patients, ensuring cleaner, safer and more dignified environments for patients and staff alike.
In Macia Health Centre in the Bilene District, the rehabilitation of the laundry unit was carried out in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Health. The laundry unit used by both patients and staff was in a deteriorated condition, particularly the restrooms. RAF Global’s intervention was aimed at significantly improving hygiene and overall functionality, addressing urgent needs for vulnerable patients, especially expectant and new mothers, who were the most affected by the previous unsanitary conditions.
In 2025, RAF Global initiated a dedicated Community Nutrition intervention across Gaza Province to promote household-level awareness and action on nutrition. The initiative aims to strengthen food security and encourage dietary diversity through practical and locally driven solutions. Families are supported in establishing kitchen gardens and participating in live cooking sessions that demonstrate how to grow and prepare nutrient-rich meals using locally available ingredients. Each year, up to 120 families across Gaza develop home gardens that enable them to directly source and cook nutrient-dense food.
A second area of focus under Community Nutrition is raising awareness about early childhood nutrition, with a particular focus on under-five children attending RAF Global-supported Early Childhood Development centers (ECDs). RAF Global currently supports up to 500 children annually across eight ECD centers in Gaza province and one in Matola district.
As part of its broader Climate Smart Agriculture agenda, RAF Global also promotes the cultivation and consumption of moringa and citrus trees. Nutrition sessions and demonstration plots raise awareness among caregivers and school staff about the health benefits of incorporating moringa and citrus into daily diet, particularly for children and lactating mothers.
RAF Global, in collaboration with local hospitals and coordination with public and private partners, has conducted numerous health camps and awareness outreach events, which have helped identify and refer elderly patients suffering from cataract. They have been, thus, enabled to access timely care and regain their vision.
Patients diagnosed with cataract are supported through the entire treatment journey, beginning with referrals for free surgeries at district or provincial hospitals, followed by comprehensive post-operative care, medication and counselling. Over 1,500 cataract surgeries have been facilitated.
In addition to patient support, RAF Global has played a critical role in strengthening the health system by supplying cataract-related medical and surgical equipment to hospitals, including Ophthalmology microscope. This contribution has significantly reduced the cost of surgery per patient. Intensive training programmes for ophthalmologists have been facilitated, helping to build local capacity and improve the quality of eye care services.
RAF Global has supported more than 1,500 individuals — including children, youth, and adults — with hearing aids, significantly enhancing their quality of life. These efforts have been made possible through close collaboration with audiologists from the ENT departments of Gaza and Maputo Public Hospitals, as well as the Ministry of Health, who have played an essential role in awareness drives and hearing aid camps.
Each year, RAF Global conducts dedicated ear care campaigns in primary and secondary schools to promote awareness of ear hygiene and early detection of hearing issues. These school-based initiatives focus on educating students about proper ear care practices, screening for early symptoms, and facilitating timely diagnosis and treatment.
Students identified with hearing challenges are supported through services such as earwax removal, which often leads to immediate improvement in classroom hearing. The screening also helps detect early signs of ear disease, enabling timely medical intervention and ensuring better learning outcomes.
RAF Global launched its flagship initiative, Project Bhojan, in 2018 in Maputo Province by providing nutritious meals to children in orphanages. In 2019, its reach was expanded to include elderly residents in old-age homes. Over time, the Project has grown to support children on the street as well. Furthermore, Project Bhojan also ensures healthy meals for young learners at RAF Global’s Early Childhood Development Centres.
Beyond nutrition, RAF Global responds to other urgent needs by distributing essential daily-use items such as soaps, sanitary pads, sanitisers, and season-specific support like blankets for newborns and wheelchairs for persons with disabilities. These items are delivered periodically to underserved populations across Gaza and Maputo provinces.
RAF Global is committed to improving the education system in Mozambique through diverse intervention strategies and partnership approaches with allied stakeholders. With a vision of ensuring universal access to quality education and equal learning opportunities for children from underprivileged families, RAF Global has implemented several initiatives in Education under the following sub-themes:
RAF Global supports vulnerable children by providing direct material assistance that addresses key barriers to school attendance and retention. Every year, up to 1800 students across Gaza province receive essential supplies such as textbooks, stationery, uniforms, and hygiene kits. This support not only eases the financial burden on families but also helps improve school participation and learning continuity.
RAF Global aims to reduce the technology gap in education by equipping government schools with smart classrooms, devices, and e-learning tools. The support includes the provision of computers, projectors, microscopes, and internet connectivity through modems, empowering students with access to modern educational resources. In addition to digital tools, RAF Global carries out renovations to upgrade science and computer classrooms - comprehensive repair and refurbishment, aimed at creating engaging, technology-enabled learning environments that foster curiosity, innovation, and academic growth.
Recognising the critical importance of Early Childhood care and Development in shaping a child’s cognitive skills and aptitude, RAF Global has established Early Childhood Development Centres across underserved communities in its intervention areas in Mozambique. These centres serve as foundational spaces for learning, growth, and holistic development for children aged 2 to 5 years.
Each Centre is structured into two age-based groups - one for children aged 2-3 years and another for those aged 4-5 years. The curriculum is carefully designed to offer age-appropriate, play-based learning activities that cater to the developmental milestones of each group, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning and success.
The centres also provide a nutritious daily meal to support the nutritional requirements of children. The centres are also equipped with updated teaching material and learning aids, creating an engaging, supportive, and enriching environment for young learners.
Under the School Improvement Programme, RAF Global provides comprehensive support to seven government schools in the Gaza Province with an aim to improve learning environments for students.
One of the key initiatives is the upgradation of the school library facility. Libraries have been equiped with academic and non-academic books to help develop strong reading habits and expand knowledge beyond the classroom.
Beyond library enhancement, RAF Global focuses on strengthening overall school infrastructure and improving teaching resources by supplying educational material, stationery, sports equipment, and uniforms. Support for under-resourced government schools is guided by a strategic needs assessment, ensuring tailored assistance based on specific requirements.
RAF Global organises training sessions for school teachers on inclusive education, teaching pedagogy, and yoga and meditation for personal development. These sessions are facilitated by experts from the District Education, Youth, and Technology Services (SDJET) and the Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT). Teachers from RAF Global-supported Early Childhood Development centres also receive specialised training in collaboration with allied government departments. The training programmes are designed to enhance teaching skills and promote effective, inclusive classroom practices.
Since 2021, RAF Global has been implementing strategic initiatives in Gaza and Maputo provinces to foster sustainable farming practices among small farmers and enhance community resilience to climate change. Key support initiatives include expert-led training sessions and ongoing technical and resource support for farmers. The dual strategy of equipping farmers with skills for land and backyard farming, alongside fostering community collaboration in Moringa tree plantation drives, is paving the way for sustainable livelihoods and enhancing public health.
In collaboration with district government functionaries under the District Economic Activities Services, RAF Global is training small farmers, both men and women, in natural farming practices. These sessions educate farmers on sustainable agricultural techniques, such as composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control. It is aimed at reducing dependence on chemical fertilisers and pesticides, to enhance soil fertility and promote ecological balance. Such training equips farmers to produce healthier crops, cater to the growing market demand for organic produce, and contribute to climate resilience. Similarly, to promote kitchen gardening as a practical and sustainable food production method, women from marginalised communities are taught how to grow vegetables, herbs, and fruits in small spaces using minimal resources. These initiatives are aimed at the self-sufficiency of communities regarding food security.
The Moringa tree, often referred to as the ‘miracle tree’, is known for its rapid growth, resilience to harsh climates, and high nutritional value. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, its leaves, seeds, and by-products serve as a crucial source of food and medicinal resources for communities. These trees not only enrich biodiversity but also serve as a source of food, fodder, and income, making them an asset in climate-smart agricultural strategies.
RAF Global promotes Moringa through an awareness campaign and plantation drive, providing free saplings to community members along with guidance on cultivation and maintenance. Hundreds of saplings have been planted in various regions of Gaza and Maputo provinces, including school and health centre premises, street corners and community lands.
In Mozambique, national identity cards and birth certificates serve as foundational documents, critical for accessing a wide range of essential services such as enrolling in schools, opening bank accounts, securing healthcare, and obtaining formal employment. These documents are also key to securing an individual’s legal identity and recognition within society.
Recognising the barriers faced by rural and underserved populations in acquiring these vital documents, RAF Global launched community-based public service camps in 2022. These camps were designed as “one-stop-shops”, bringing government services directly to the doorstep of the people, free of cost. Residents could obtain birth certificates, national identity cards, national tax numbers, and open bank accounts, all at their doorstep.
The initiative placed special emphasis on supporting vulnerable groups, including women, single mothers, and unwed mothers, whose children often face school enrollment challenges due to the absence of birth certificates.
These public service camps are conducted in close collaboration with key government departments - the Autoridade Tributária (Tax Authority), Directorate of Civil Identification, District Education, Youth, and Technology Services (SDJET), and District Registration and Notary Service (SDRN).
RAF Global has been actively supporting communities affected by natural disasters and public health emergencies through timely, targeted, and impactful interventions.
In 2015, the organisation provided critical support to 300 flood-affected individuals, addressing their urgent basic needs. In the wake of Cyclone Idai in 2019, humanitarian assistance was extended to over 47,000 people, delivering essential food supplies, clothing, and services to help communities cope with the devastating aftermath.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, RAF Global further intensified its efforts by distributing face masks, conducting health and safety training and awareness sessions. Food kits were distributed to families in need, and medical items and equipment were supplied to frontline hospitals to support their healthcare response.
